What a Difference Mercy Makes
Pastor Tim Maness
Sunday, September 28, 2008
Isaiah 43:16-21; 1 Peter 2:9-10

I. The relation of the Bible and its good news of salvation and that of TV commercials

  • Our gospel faith is organized around the way it was and the way it is.
  • The difference is one brings forth truth and the other is false.
  • The old form of life and the new form of life.

II. Pre-mercy people

  • Once you were no people
  • Once you had not received mercy
  • Pre-church, pre-gospel, pre-mercy, pre-life folk

III. Then the miracle of Jesus

  • A new community
  • Mercy changes everything and makes all things new
  • Mercy did not just start with Jesus, it exists in the Old Testament

IV. Mercy causes to exist that which was extinct. (1 Peter 9-10)

  • We are someone special!!!
  • To proclaim the mighty acts of him who has called us.
  • Mercy is still at work in our lives
    • To declare no trouble is beyond the reach of God’s mercy.
    • To declare that a technological world is not closed to God’s good mercy.
    • To declare that no quarrel or dispute is beyond God’s reconciliation.
    • To declare that no abandonment leaves one so helpless that God cannot help in mercy.
  • God is not a hypothesis or a good idea, He is an agent who turns what was into what will be.

When Satan Strikes, Strike Back
Pastor Tim Maness
Sunday, September 14, 2008
1 John 4:4

How do we strike back at Satan?

I. We strike back with the Word of God

  • Jesus said to Satan, “It is written….” (Matt 4:4, 7, 10)
  • The Word of God is the sword of the Spirit
  • Hide the Word of God in your heart

II. We strike back through Prayer and fasting. (Daniel 10:2, 3, 10-14)

  • Daniel prayed and fasted for 21 days
  • Jesus told the disciples demon power is conquered by prayer and fasting.
  • Paul admonished in Ephesians 6:18 to be strong in the Lord: “Praying always with all prayer and supplication in the Spirit.”

III. We strike back by reminding Satan there is power in the blood of Christ.

  • Hebrews 2:14
  • We have redemption through the blood of Christ (Ephesians 1:7)
  • We overcome the accuser of the brethren “by the blood of the Lamb, and by the word of… (Our) testimony”

IV. We strike back by going into action

  • We overcome evil with good (Romans 12:21)
  • We resist the devil (James 4:7)

We must always be on Guard!

Power to Remember, Freedom to Forget
Pastor Tim Maness
Sunday, September 7, 2008
Isaiah 51:1-3, 43:15-21, 55:12-13

I. The Community of Faith is called to remembrance (Isaiah 51:1-2)

  • Abraham and Sarah
  • Do not forget people of faith who have walked before you

Remembering corrects 2 misconceptions

  1. Our society remembers almost nothing.
  2. If we forget, then the church was only a lucky break, a stumbling accident.

II. Do not remember former things, because I am doing a new thing (Isaiah 43:18-20)

  • Living in the good old day without the results of the good old days
  • Focus adverted from the past to the present

3 Things about this new thing God is calling us to

  1. The loss of the old scares us
  2. Nobody knows the shape of the newness
  3. The newness of God seldom comes without obedient human investment.

III. Go out in joy and in peace (Isaiah 55:12-13)

  • Go the way of father Abraham, to a new way and place of life
  • Go out laughing like mother Sarah, surprised by new life.
  • Go out to neighbors waiting for a caring act of generosity.

Therefore

  • The mission of this church is not finished
  • The work of this church is not a holding action
  • The future of this church is not business as usual

Philippians 3:12-15

12 Not that I have already obtained all this, or have already been made perfect, but I press on to take hold of that for which Christ Jesus took hold of me. 13 Brothers, I do not consider myself yet to have taken hold of it. But one thing I do: Forgetting what is behind and straining toward what is ahead, 14 I press on toward the goal to win the prize for which God has called me heavenward in Christ Jesus.

15 All of us who are mature should take such a view of things. And if on some point you think differently, that too God will make clear to you.
